 Spicy, Woody

Call it by its name or, more simply, by ‘Hermann’.  Either way the people who compliment you are going to need to know which fragrance you’re wearing.  A cool, sheer and woody blend that is unlike any other.

FULL DESCRIPTION

Who goes beside you into the forest on the darkest night ? In Victor Hugo’s poem, « À quoi songeaient les deux cavaliers dans la forêt », (What Two Horsemen Were Thinking in the Forest), the narrator says “ by my side, Hermann seemed to me like a shadow. ”

We all have shadows, even at night in the dark forest. You may call yours by another name : your invisible friend. Your conscience, your soul, maybe even your complementary ego. Your shadow could have a name, like Hermann. Or your shadow could be your perfume. This is your companion. You can argue with your companion, you can challenge your companion, you can test the boundaries of your own attitudes. You can debate the finer points of existence. But you cannot lose this companion, not ever. This is your alternative self. As you move through life and contemplate its meaning, you ask unanswerable questions. When you’re overwhelmed with uncertainties, look to your shadow. Maybe you’ll get a response. Maybe not. But at least you’ll have an interesting conversation.

Dark, grounded, unique

It’s all trees and earth. Without the need to take that or sweeten it or shift the dry down to something warm or spicy, at least on my skin. I wouldn’t mind clearer floral notes, but I’m in no way disappointed by the picture the scent evokes for me. It’s casual and suited more to cooler weather and wonderfully unlike anything else I’ve experienced. Mellow and serious.

A great, wet rosy fragrance for rainy days. It lasts about 5-6 hours on me

Cloaked in mystery

While this fragrance receives the most compliments of any I've ever worn ("complex and alluring," to quote another reviewer), what I prize the most about "Hermann" is that it creates a veil of "green solitude," to quote the Hugo poem from which "Hermann" derives its name. The poem speaks of singing fountains (aquatic), whispering oaks and bushes (woods, galbanum and frankincense resins), a night that caresses with gentle flames (the faintest smokiness, perhaps implied by the patchouli). The poem and the fragrance evoke a mood of deep introspection. In a noisy restaurant or a city street, I am simultaneously connected to the solitudes of the forest and the chapel.
It is perfect in autumn, though I suspect it will do well in spring. Occasionally, the rose absolute emerges in the most captivating way. The dry down on my skin after several hours is mostly frankincense, but it is warm and grounding, not austere.

Cold, Dark vibes

I requested some recommendations on Reddit for a fragrance with subtle notes of aged papyrus or mildly decaying leaves/flora. I was recommended this fragrance and the Reddit user said it reminded them of something a mortician might wear 🤣. This doesn’t hit those notes I was describing exactly but I was so impressed with it that I purchased 2 sample versions and eventually the whole bottle. Someone owes that Reddit user some money because they earned you a forever customer!
