Get To Know The Fragrance Families

We use these “family” classifications for fragrances, like Gourmands and Aromatics, but what do they really mean? Here’s a guide to understanding these fragrance families when selecting your perfect fragrance! There are 9 main scent families in the Etat Libre D’Orange world that are used to guide our customers to find the perfect scent! Enjoy the Exploration!

Fresh Citrus

Cologne from Etat Libre D’Orange is a true testament to a fresh citrus. This scent family usually includes fragrances mainly composed of citrus notes such as bergamot, lemon, orange, tangerine and possibly some freshness from white florals. These fragrances tend to have a more freshness and lightness to them.

Spicy Aromatics

Aromatic notes usually combine sage, rosemary, cumin, lavender and other plants which possess a very intensive “grassy” or “herbaceous” scent. They are often combined with spicy notes such as pepper, nutmeg, cloves or cinnamon to create a scent with freshness, warmth and spice. It is the perfect combination for those cold winter nights and Rien is our top pick!

Juicy Fruits

Fruity scents tend to include ingredients such as apricot, raspberry, lychee and apple to bring out the juiciness and sweetness in an actual fruit. YUM! If this sounds like your ‘jam’, try I Am Trash.

Voluptuous Florals

With its natural, beautiful scent, the floral note is one of the most commonly used in perfumery. Some typical florals are lily of the valley, rose and jasmine which can create an incredible bouquet of flowers. Etat Libre d’Orange uses some of the best flowers which makes for some of the best floral perfumes on the market! Our must-have floral bouquet is Yes I Do.

Sweet Gourmands

A gourmand fragrance is a perfume consisting primarily of synthetic edible notes, such as honey, chocolate, vanilla or candy. You just want to eat them! If you want to smell delicious, you will have to try award-winning Like This.

Sultry Powders

Powders have an old-world reputation, but when done right, powdery notes can create some of the best, most seductive perfumes. The powdery effect can be created by musk, iris, violet or sometimes a combination of vanilla & woods. Putain des Palaces brings a sultry powder fragrance into the modern world.

Earthy Woods

When Fat Electrician came to life, the earthy wood scent would never be the same! Woody scents tend to smell earthy, warm and dry and are frequently used in combination with mossy and leathery notes. The most common wood notes used are sandalwood, rosewood, agarwood (also known as Oud), birch, cedar, juniper, and pine.

Supple Leathers

There is nothing better than the smell of a new leather jacket or that new car interior! Leather can be exactly as you imaged in some fragrances or can have a sweet, earthy animalic smokiness to it. Combined with some fresh, spicy and warm notes, Tom of Finland is like no leather you have ever experienced!

Addictive Tobaccos

Etat Libre D’Orange is known for Jasmin et Cigarette – one of the most uncommon pairs in the perfume game! Most people think of cigarette smoke when the word tobacco is mentioned but, in actuality, this note is fresh, crisp scent with a citrus top, juniper berries and a woody base. In general, Tobaccos can add a variety of depth and character, even some freshness or sweetness to a fragrance.

A jack of all trades, Etat Libre D’Orange is known for taking extreme opposite notes and making some of the most wonderful perfumes. We suggest trying different fragrances in different family categories so that you can truly experience it all. Who knows, maybe your new favorite scent is waiting in a category you’d least expect?
